We built HomeTabs with privacy as a core value, not a marketing angle. Here's how that actually works.
HomeTabs needs to store your data - that's how we sync across your devices and let you access your bills, budgets, and documents whenever you need them. But storing data means protecting it, and we take that seriously.
Your most sensitive information - financial amounts, account numbers, and documents - is encrypted before it leaves your device. We can't read it even if we wanted to. Names, dates, and categories aren't encrypted because we need to search through them and let you filter your data. That's a conscious trade-off we make.
Here's something most apps don't do: we separate your identity from your household data. If someone somehow breached our database, they'd get information about bills and budgets, but nothing that would tell them whose bills and budgets those were. Your encrypted files would be useless to them anyway. This isn't perfect security theater - it's an actual architectural choice that limits the damage of a hypothetical breach.
Your data stays with your household. You get all the features, no limitations. You don't contribute to any community insights, and community features won't work for you - but that's fine if that's not what you want.
You can choose to contribute anonymized data to help improve HomeTabs for everyone. This feeds into things like vendor ratings, smarter default budgets, and features that learn from how households use the app. In return, you get access to community insights - see how your spending compares to similar households, get recommendations based on what works for others, that kind of thing.
Switching between these is simple. Leave at any time. Your data is yours.
If you sign in with Google, we access only basic profile information (email, name, profile picture) to create your account. We adhere to Google's API Services User Data Policy, including Limited Use requirements.
For complete details on how we handle Google user data, see our Google User Data Policy.
If you want privacy from other people in your household, HomeTabs isn't the tool for that - it's designed for shared household management. But you have complete privacy from us and from the internet at large. Your financial data, document storage, and spending patterns are yours alone.
If something here isn't clear, ask. We'd rather explain it directly than have you wonder.
